Message from the Chair – International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day 2020

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day 2020

Postvention Australia recognises the importance of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, which helps connect those who have lost a loved one to suicide. We hope it also creates more community awareness and understanding of the unique journey of suicide bereavement and its lasting impact.

Often it may be difficult to support someone who has lost a loved one to suicide. Suicide is a difficult and distressing incident. You may not know what to say or do to help someone grieving a suicide loss. We encourage everyone in the community who knows someone bereaved by suicide to simply reach out and offer an ear, not just on this special day, but any day.

We hope these short factsheets may help the bereaved and also those who would like to have a conversation with someone impacted by a suicide loss: https://bit.ly/FactsheetsSuicideBereaved

Postvention Australia is launching a series of monthly webinars between December 2020 and September 2021. The Building Hope Together Webinar Series is funded by the NSW Ministry of Health as part of their Towards Zero Suicides Initiatives to better support those impacted by suicide. The NSW Post-Suicide Support Webinar Series will bring together people bereaved, peer and lived experience workers, health and frontline workers, professionals, researchers and experts to discuss various postvention topics.

The first webinar will be held on Tuesday, 1st December, 10-11am AEDT. The topic is “The impact of COVID-19 on suicide bereavement”, recognising the increased isolation and negative impact on mental health that the bereaved already experience. The sharing of lived experience stories will be part of each webinar, being a source of both healing and increasing understanding of the bereavement journey.
